Says that she will return to the US in February but has to leave for England sometime in April; is sorry that the leather portfolio and purse for Virgil havn't arrived; changed her mind about mentioning Gerda's age in her new book; she will set aside money in her will for Gerda's publication.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
